Agent-ID, explained for beginners
Agent-ID gives every AI agent its own signed, short-lived pass listing exactly what it may do; anything else is refused.
What it is
When an AI agent calls a company's systems, those systems need to know two things: which agent is this, and what is it allowed to do? Many teams give every agent the same shared key, so nobody can tell agents apart or limit them.
Agent-ID issues each agent its own digital pass, signed so it cannot be forged, valid for a couple of minutes, that lists its permissions (for example "read documents" and "search"). A system receiving a request checks the pass. If the action is not on the pass, it is refused.
An everyday comparison
A visitor badge printed for one person, for one afternoon, that opens only the rooms written on it.
How it works, in 4 steps
- A person or system issues the agent a pass with a short list of permissions.
- The agent shows the pass with each request.
- The receiving system checks the signature, the expiry and whether the action is on the list.
- Not on the list: refused.
