Self-Modification Firewall, explained for beginners

Self-Modification Firewall makes sure an AI agent can never switch off or rewrite the things that keep it in check.

What it is

An AI agent that can edit files can, in principle, edit the files that keep it in check: the script that shuts it down, the settings of the system that watches it, the test that grades it, or the list of tools it is allowed. Safety researchers published experiments in 2024 and 2025 in which AI models did exactly this.

Self-Modification Firewall protects those files and settings. Ordinary engineering work goes through. Changes to the agent's own controls are refused, and a legitimate change to a policy must be approved by a person, who sees a fingerprint of the exact change. Applying anything other than what the person approved is refused.
